Evgeni Plushenko withdraws from world championships in Turin on doctors advice
MOSCOW - Olympic silver medallist Evgeni Plushenko will skip the world figure skating championships in Italy after experiencing pain while landing a quadruple jump. Plushenko's agent Ari Zakarian confirmed Friday the gold medallist at the 2006 Games in Turin has withdrawn from next week's world event at the same arena. Plushenko also has a silver medal from the 2002 Olympics. "He is in perfect condition," Zakarian said Friday, "but yesterday in practice he had 54 jumps and he started getting pain on the quad toe. So doctors advised him to rest for two weeks.
"He does not want to compete without the quad."
Plushenko, 27, is a three-time world gold medallist (2001, 2003 and 2004). He retired after the Turin Olympics and came back this season, winning each of his competitions until finishing second in Vancouver behind American Evan Lysacek, who also is skipping worlds.
Sergei Voronov will replace Plushenko.
Earlier this month, Plushenko said he planned to skate at the 2014 Sochi Games in his native Russia.
Many Russians felt Plushenko deserved to win the Vancouver gold medal, but his free skate was flawed, marred by several sloppy jumps and including enough weak elements that he lost the technical mark to Lysacek. Plushenko usually dominates that category.
He loudly complained that Lysacek did not do any quadruple jumps - Plushenko did one in the short program and two in the free skate. Plushenko also compared men's skating to ice dance at the Olympics.
Plushenko wants the value of the quad increased so more skaters will be encouraged to try it. Lysacek is the first man since 1994 to win the Olympic title without doing a quad.
Reueters zice ca, desi nu vine sa concureze, Plushenko ar veni totusi la Torino sa urmareasca evenimentul. In principiu, daca ma intrebati, ar trebui sa fie deja acolo, ca maine avea sesiune de antrenament intre 20.30 si 21.00... Sa nu ziceti ca nu ma informasem, eram pregatita sa ma duc inclusiv la antrenamente.
Evgeny Plushenko pulls out of world skating championships
MILAN (Reuters) - Olympic silver medalist Yevgeny Plushenko has pulled out of next week's figure skating world championships because of injury.
"We've received a mail, he is injured. He will not compete," a spokeswoman for the Turin organizers said on Friday, adding the Russian may come to the event to watch.
Plushenko was examined in St Petersburg and told he should not perform strenuous exercise for at least two weeks because of trouble with his knees, president of the Russian skating federation Valentin Piseyev told local media.
"Unfortunately he will not be able to compete in Turin. His physical condition will not allow him to perform at his highest level," Piseyev said.
Former Olympic champion Plushenko heavily criticized the judging at the Vancouver Winter Games.
The worlds, scheduled only a month after Vancouver, have already been hit by a number of pullouts.
Men's Olympic champion Evan Lysacek of the United States has opted not to travel while China's Vancouver pairs gold medalists Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo have retired.
Acestea fiind zise, ma intorc la facut bagaje si la obisnuit cu ideea de Mondiale fara Plushenko :(
